OK, hear me out. We never did get to the bottom of the handwriting in The Great Game that Sherlock immediately recognized as female, did we? (The old lady mentioning “the soft voice” was another clue that Moriarty had a female accomplice.)
And what woman do we know was hanging out with Moriarty at this time?
That’s right: Molly Hooper. She was even the one who introduced him to Sherlock.
But, let’s jump (no pun intended) to the Reichenbach Fall.
Ultimately, what was Moriarty planning up on that roof? What were his aims? To destroy Sherlock?
Well, Sherlock didn’t kill himself. He got back his reputation and even managed to dismantle Moriarty’s criminal web. All because Moriarty was apparently expecting Sherlock to kill himself and didn’t figure out that Molly would help him fake it.
So, is Moriarty a dope (unlikely, he’s one of the world’s smartest men),or did he have another agenda?
What if Moriarty deliberately engineered the whole thing…solely so Sherlock would turn to Molly for help, she’d comply and thus gaining his trust?
Moriarty didn’t leave her out by mistake, he knew fine well Sherlock would turn to her (Molly also made a point before this, conveniently, of telling Sherlock she’d help him in any way she could.)
Presumably Molly also used her hospital connections and medical knowledge to help Moriarty fake his suicide too.
The main thing coming out of TRF? Contrary to what people believe, Moriarty got exactly what he wanted.
Sherlock now trusts her with his life, and Moriarty now has one of his people in Sherlock’s inner circle. She’s his friend, maybe even a possible lover one day, assuming Sherlock can get over his issues. That gives Moriarty a huge psychological advantage when he returns. And Sherlock finding out Molly was on the dark side all along would be a significant emotional blow (only John and Irene mean more to him).
There’s more than one way to burn the heart out of someone.
Moriarty never wanted to KILL Sherlock’s friends (he could have done that easily); he wanted to show Sherlock that even his beloved pals would turn on him in the end and leave him a broken shell of a person as hateful of people as he is.
"Maybe that’s just my type." Is it possible that line is more sinister than people initially thought? What if she wasn’t joking? She actively likes sociopaths.
Similar to Mary, she doesn’t appear to have any family (spends Xmas by herself per ASIB). Her father is dead…and that’s really all we know about her private life.
There was Tom, but he may have just been some guy to pass the time with till Moriarty got back (interestingly, she gave him the elbow right before he announced his return). She may have also been playing a joke on Sherlock with Tom: she was well-aware of the resemblance and knew he’d be freaked out.
Another interesting thing: She tells us in TRF, she dumped the most unstable and dangerous criminal on the planet and his response to that was to…eh, just leave her alone and never bother her again? Is that consistent with the crazy Moriarty we know and love?
She also a lot smarter than she lets on, and maybe even quite emotionally manipulative. Who else could get an apology out of Sherlock frigging Holmes or be able to slap him around?
As for Molly’s REAL feelings about Sherlock; she probably does find him attractive (well, look at him) even if the lovesick puppy thing is an act. If they really wanted to salvage the character after a reveal like this, they could play the whole “but I fell in love with you for real!” card so fans feel OK with liking her again a la Irene.
Granted, all this is a bit far-fetched but it would possibly be a cool twist in season 4 or 5. Thoughts?
If you were to sum up what Moriarty’s involvement in series three is, it would be the question of how much we miss him. -laughs-
